How Close Is Too Close? Trees and Your House

The distances that matter for roots, limbs, and roofs — what to do about trees that are already too close, and how to plant so the next generation isn't.

Every big tree near a house started as a cute sapling that seemed miles from the walls. Trees grow into their relationships with structures — and by the time the limbs are over the roof and the roots are at the foundation, the easy options are gone. Here's how to think about the ones you have and the ones you're planting.

The overhead problem

Limbs over a roof do three kinds of work against you: they abrade shingles as they sway, they drop leaves that dam the gutters, and they bridge squirrels and other pests straight onto the house. The standard guidance is clearance — canopy pruned back so nothing rests on or repeatedly strikes the roof. Clearance pruning is routine, cheap, and dramatically cheaper than what it prevents.

The root question

Roots follow moisture and grow where the soil allows — the old image of roots punching through foundations is mostly myth, but the real version still matters: roots can exploit existing cracks, lift walkways and driveways, and in some soils, large trees close to a slab contribute to moisture swings that move foundations. Distance is the cheap insurance; the farther a large tree stands from the slab, the less of this conversation applies.

The failure-radius math

The simplest distance rule is the tree's own height: any tree tall enough to reach the house if it fell is a tree whose health matters to the house. That doesn't make every such tree a removal candidate — it makes them assessment candidates. A sound, healthy tree inside its own failure radius is a normal part of a treed lot; a declining one is a project.

When the tree is already too close

If a mature tree is crowding the house, removal isn't the automatic answer. Clearance pruning handles the overhead, health assessment answers the risk question, and monitoring covers the rest. Removal enters the picture when the tree is declining, damaging, or simply the wrong tree in the wrong spot — a decision worth making with facts rather than anxiety.
